Warehouse mezzanines are a cost-effective way to increase the square footage of your business premises. Easy to maintain, they’re built for heavy-duty environments and come pre-built for immediate installation. Let’s take a look at the different warehouse mezzanine materials available.

Steel mezzanines

One of the more common options for mezzanine floors, steel is moisture resistant and provides secure resistance to foot traffic. Thanks to its high strength and low weight properties, it’s perfect for warehouse environments where the storage of liquids, heavy objects or retail stock is required. Aesthetically pleasing, steel mezzanines are suitable for creating customer service areas or cafes too.

Unlike other mezzanine materials, steel is able to withstand a number of weather and environmental conditions and is the most economical material available. Thanks to its durability, a steel mezzanine can be installed and repositioned with ease. The four main types of steel mezzanine are building-supported, free-standing, rack-supported and shelving-supported.

Resin composite mezzanines

Made from composite boards with a resin coating, this type of mezzanine flooring has a high density and is suitable for transporting and storing heaving loads, including dollies, carts and pallet jacks. The resin surface is not only skid-resistant, but it’s also resistant to chemicals and abrasion. Resin is also more hygienic than many other mezzanine flooring options thanks to its stain-proof properties.

Ideal for warehouses where a more ‘finished’ look is desired, the chemical bonding of resin often makes it stronger than concrete. As such, it’s resistant to breakages, whether it’s bearing tons of stock or forceful objects are dropped onto it. All of these properties make resin composite mezzanines suitable for most warehouse environments.

Poured concrete mezzanines

The most durable type of mezzanine flooring, concrete minimizes the transmission of noise through the deck and has a high point load. As such, it’s ideal for military and industrial applications as well as premises where hygienic surfaces are required. Unlike steel, it is a permanent solution.

Poured concrete mezzanines are constructed using a steel framework before the concrete is poured on top. Around 6 inches of concrete is applied to the surface, which is fire and water resistant once set.

Plywood mezzanines

Suitable for structural and industrial applications in dry conditions, plywood mezzanines offer exceptional sturdiness which permits the transportation and storage of heavy materials (racking, shelving and work platforms). Most commonly constructed using boards with tongue-and-groove joints, a plywood mezzanine is quick and cost-effective to construct and is an ideal solution for businesses that need more space but don’t want the hassle of relocating.
